Community Through Clay Workshop Series

Join us via Zoom  to learn traditional hand-building ceramic techniques to create unique ceramic projects inspired by varied cultural influences, including that of Black and Indegenous potters in the US. This workshop series is a 9-week long series, offering different projects each class.

This Community Through Clay Workshop Series is sponsored by Culture Blocks— a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County.

Intro To Clay at York County Arts (July 24, 2021 10 AM – 2 PM)

In the class students will have an introductory experience with clay, where they will learn basic hand-building techniques including but not limited to coil-building, pinch pottery, slab-building, surface design and etcetera. In the course students will have the opportunity to create unique and useful piece(s) of pottery.

Memory House Altars at The Gantt with Lydia Thompson (July 10 & 17, 2021)

This is a two session hands-on workshop that will introduce ceramic hand building construction techniques such as slabs, coiling, carving, and surface design. Participants will create a relief clay wall house tile using
these techniques. This workshop will be in person at the Harvey Gantt Center in Charlotte, NC.

No prior experience in clay or art required.
